Living The Dream - God Bless the USA

Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country. - John F. Kennedy

Chuck Backemeyer

Chuck and Jan, it doesn’t seem like you can have one without the other. We met Chuck and Jan shortly after buying our house on Star Lake and quickly became friends. I am not sure I have ever met nicer people.
We went on several road trips mostly to Granny’s for ice cream or just to cruise around. Chuck and I were partners for a couple of years in the annual bass tournament, and you would not believe how competitive he was. I remember one time Chuck had a big bass on and his line broke and this gentle man with a smile as big as Star Lake was really upset. But we had lots of fun anyway.
One year we were on a road trip and could visit them, so we called and was told in no uncertain terms that not only were we coming by for supper, but we were spending the night and in the morning after breakfast we could be on our way again. Chuck and Jan gave us a tour of their town and took us by the farm, squeezed in as much activity as we had time for because we had to get back in time to cook steaks.
On our way back from our trip we got in trouble with Chuck because we stayed in a hotel about one hour’s drive from their house. We told him that we checked in to the hotel at 1:AM and that it would have been too late by the time we got to their house. His response: “that doesn’t matter, we can get up.
I have so many pleasant memories of Chuck (dad as Mike and Charlie called him, and Jan was mom), that it would be impossible to tell them all here but we will truly miss him and he will be in our hearts for ever.
